These urban spaces are defined with Dwellings.

Most people spend the majority of their lives in their homes: the cost of housing accounts for the greatest proportion of most people’s income. Domestic space heating and lighting accounts for half the nations CO2 emissions

Unchanging principles also apply to the design of good dwellings. Amongst these are:

• Access to, and circulation within the house that defines the transition from the public to the private space;
• Well proportioned internal spaces, not only adequate for their functions but, calm or dynamic & well lit, comfortably, cosy, or exiting;
• Appropriate and economical use of materials;
• Appropriate use of available construction techniques – not resistant to changes but recognising the benefits and economy of the ‘tried and tested’;
• Energy efficient design to minimise the environmental dis-benefits and cost of excessive energy consumption.
