Birkett Cole Lowe is a relatively new architectural practice, formed in 1996 by three established architects with a common interest in the design of sustainable buildings. Our Sheffield based office undertakes a wide variety of projects which cover both new build and refurbishment.
The practice is committed to a high standard of design which is demonstrated by Dearne Valley College and Lancaster Sanitary Station, both achieving architectural awards. The practice has also been finalists in two national design competitions, the Hawes Country Side Museum in the Yorkshire Dales and more recently in the York Millennium Bridge.
Birkett Cole Lowe is very familiar with the design, management and organisation of a variety of disciplines, and regularly work with a variety of other professionals to meet clients requirements. Our approach to all projects is to develop a close working relationship with our clients, by tailoring the design and our service to meet their needs.
The practice concentrates on the core activity of design. This is defined widely. We consider that ‘design’ embraces conceptual and technical design; that good building design is rooted in the process of construction and the nature of materials; and that ‘Interior Design’ is not a separate discipline to be divorced from building design. The realisation of good design is impossible without effective communication between designer and builder.
Particular interests are; design for low energy consumption, design in historic contexts and the maintenance of historic buildings.
