High Hazels Park

In March 2002 Birkett Cole Lowe were commissioned by Sheffield City Council to undertake a feasibility study for the conversion of an existing shelter into an environmental education centre run by the Park Wardens. The client wanted a building that demonstrated the use of sustainable materials and renewable energy in the building services. The site has access to mains water and electricity but is remote from any mains gas.

The proposed design developed the use of timber and straw bale construction to enclose the existing shelter and provide high levels of insulation. A small wind turbine, solar water heating and photovoltaic cells contribute to the general power usage and space heating and provide over 20% of the power use from renewable energy sources. Rainwater harvesting is incorporated in the design for the operation of flush toilets.

The anticipated project cost is £200,000.
